Various Facts About Radiofrequency Energy From Your Cell Phone and Your Health

The most common use of a cell phone is between a customer and a cell tower. Communication between two end devices reaches each other through electromagnetic radiation, commonly called radiofrequency (RF) energy. RF energy is called RF radiation.

Other ionizing forms of radiation, in addition to those considered harmful, are considered harmful. Exposure to ionizing radiation through X-rays causes tissue damage in humans and living beings. Damage to DNA may cause the cell to no longer function or behave differently (for example, through cancer). RF radiation does not reflect ionizing radiation in its track.

A section of the scientific and public health community is still unsure whether RF energy has any health effects. Scientists are not sure whether exposure to radiation from cell phones will cause health harm even years later.

Many research studies have been conducted to determine the health effects of RF energy emitted by cell phones, and more studies are being analyzed. No link has yet been established between health problems and RF energy from mobile phone use.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified RF radiation as a “probable human carcinogen” (Group 2B). Carcinogen is something that causes cancer. The IARC categories indicate how strong the evidence is that something causes cancer. IARC uses “probable human carcinogen” when there is some evidence that it can cause cancer in humans, but the evidence is not conclusive. It is also used when a cause-and-effect relationship is believed to be reliable but may also be due to coincidence, bias, or confusion.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is currently exploring the effects of cell phones on certain types of tumors (growths or lumps), eye-related problems, sleep problems, memory and headaches.

Individuals have presented with a number of illnesses that they associate with exposure to electromagnetic fields, such as cell phones. The term “electromagnetic susceptibilities” is commonly referred to this phenomenon. The symptoms associated with it vary greatly from person to person and can include fatigue and tiredness, difficulty concentrating, redness and tingling of the skin, and many others. Some people may find it disabling. Electromagnetic hypersensitivity, overall, is not a diagnosis in itself, although the symptoms mentioned are real and vary widely in their relation to other causes. A trusted health care professional can help a person experiencing electromagnetic hypersensitivity find the cause and address the symptoms. According to WHO, there is no scientific evidence of a link between electromagnetic hypersensitivity and exposure to electromagnetic fields.

People can weigh the risks against the benefits of using RF energy in cell phones. Despite ongoing investigation, at this point, we lack the science needed to establish a link between health concerns and RF from cell phone use. The utility of a cell phone in a critical situation often outweighs its usefulness, often resulting in saving lives.

There is evidence that long-term cell phone use can lead to a decline in a person’s health-related physical and psychological health, and this particularly affects children and young adults. None of these effects are related to RF energy exposure.

If you’re concerned about how much you use your cell phone, here are some tips for avoiding exposure to RF radiation:

Stay away from your phone while using:

• Buy a wired headset that fits directly into the phone.
• Use loudspeaker more.
• Try texting the other person instead of calling.
• Keep your mobile phone in a backpack, briefcase or purse.

Do not use your mobile phone when it emits excessive RF energy. Do this especially when:

• Appearing once or twice on the display.
• Fast-moving buses, cars or trains.
• Streaming audio or video or sending large file content.

Over time, some pacemakers become affected by RF radiation. If you have a pacemaker and are concerned about using your cellphone, check with your health professional.
