Risks and Misconceptions Associated With Artificial Intelligence

Despite the significant benefits associated with artificial intelligence, there is a possibility that it may have far-reaching negative effects on various people who come into contact with it, directly or indirectly. One of the uses that can be identified with the use of such technology is that it is only as good as the data fed into it. Where the data given provides the possibility of having misleading results, there is a high probability that it can bring about serious problems in that effect. For example, where a hospital has set up a system that classifies asthma as high priority, it automatically classifies pneumonia as high priority, unless the case is explicitly stated otherwise. In such a case, this creates significant problems where it fails to provide patients with the high level of urgency they need to deal with their various health problems in the most efficient manner possible. Therefore, a patient who suffers from pneumonia may be subjected to a high level of increased severity of the problem he or she may be suffering from. Therefore, such a case would increase the chances of a person falling victim to a health issue that could have otherwise been handled well. The patient as a customer would not have the opportunity to benefit well from the services offered at the healthcare facility.

Another risk of the use of artificial intelligence is that, by replacing human subjects, it brings about the common problem of putting people out of work. Companies that use artificial intelligence rely on reducing the number of human subjects they are involved with. Therefore, this case brings about some major problems given the fact that it reduces the number of people who have the chance to benefit from the various employment opportunities that such companies can offer. Through such a process, there is a high probability that the given companies may fail to create the level of economic development that would be desirable in a region. The case will clearly show that such entities would lack the ability to provide the desirable high level of employment. Employment will increase the total amount of disposable income people have, ensuring that they have the ability to meet some of their needs. Through this process, companies may lack the ability to engage closely with their customers in order to meet their needs.

As stated by Boutilier and others, one of the misconceptions associated with the use of artificial intelligence is that it is likely to create the problem of replacing the core element of human intelligence. They say that it is an ethical matter where the more people want to rely on artificial intelligence, the more they agree with the idea that human knowledge is not enough and, therefore, it needs to be replaced by the use of machines and computers. Therefore, such a practice sends the message that humans do not have the necessary ability to handle various activities that would be relevant to them. This process will also help humans lose the general value towards humanity. The idea that computers and machines have replaced people in various fields is quite scary. It sends the general message that they are indispensable. However, such a view is quite misleading because people have the chance to maintain their normal state and achieve success by performing various tasks that they usually engage in.

There is also a misconception that artificial intelligence is likely to reduce the general level of emotions of people. Where people are involved in the use of computer systems to solve problems that were normally handled by humans, there is a chance that they may be out of touch with the general emotional aspect of the matter. This process will make them more capable of looking at the success of the particular system they are working with, with less chance of looking into the emotional aspects of the situation. Such people are “converted into machines” for the process of ensuring that they can meet certain requirements placed on them to come up with best practices as they relate to the various activities they are involved in. However, humans cannot be converted into “machines”. Therefore, they are able to connect with customers in the most desirable way for the process of ensuring that they have the ability to meet their needs effectively.

Artificial intelligence has its own benefits and risks. The fact that it has the chance to produce the best results for companies to ensure that they can develop high-quality products is quite important. Such companies have the ability to look at different ways through which they can deal with the various needs of the market. In such a case, there is a high probability that they will be in a good position to get a large number of customers for the various products they come up with. Artificial intelligence also ensures that companies have the ability to carry out the process of logistics. Through the given case, they will have the ability to look at the general rate of movement of various goods, which will enable them to ensure that they can reach their destination on time. This process will also contribute to ensuring that hospitals have to handle various patients correctly. On the other hand, artificial intelligence has the overall risk and misconceptions of replacing the core element of humans as well as being less aware of their emotional dimension, making them look more like machines than humans. Where used well, artificial intelligence can be used to transform customer engagement.
