Iphone 17 Pro May Come With 48-Megapixel Telephoto Camera Lens, Rumors New Leak

The new iPhone 17 Pro, expected to be released in September 2025, will come with several improvements over last year’s model, the iPhone 16 Pro. The phone is already in the news for having a new design, new screen, and enhanced processor. And another new leak suggests that the iPhone 17 Pro will also feature an improved camera system. Rumor has it that the iPhone 17 Pro may feature a 48-megapixel telephoto camera lens instead of the 12-megapixel one of the iPhone 16 Pro models. Let us get into the details.

iPhone 17 Pro Camera Leak

Per tipster Mazin Bu, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will also come with a 48-megapixel telephoto camera featuring an 85mm equivalent focal length (35mm format). This follows on from the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, which launched last September with a 12-megapixel telephoto lens offering a focal length equivalent to 120mm. The upgrade should be expected to improve portrait mode photography on the new Pro models.

But reality is not independent. The iPhone 17 Pro versions are said to offer up to 3.5x optical zoom, which is below the 5x optical zoom of the flagship models that are available in the market. With the application of in-sensor crop zoom, the same technology employed by the main camera of the iPhone 16 Pro, users are said to be able to enjoy up to 7x “lossless” digital zoom, the report states.

Apart from portrait enhancements, the new telephoto sensor is also likely to enhance low-light photography as the camera will have a better ability to capture more light for enhanced image quality.

This comes after confirming previous rumours that the iPhone 17 Pro features a three-camera setup—major, ultra-wide, and telephoto—with 48-megapixel cameras. The TrueDepth front-facing camera is also upgraded from 12-megapixels to 24-megapixels.

iPhone 17 Pro: What to expect

As far as the design is concerned, there is speculation that the iPhone 17 Pro will see some upgrades, and in a positive way. The camera bump on the iPhone 17 Pro is speculated to undergo some major redesign. Compared to the squarish camera module applied on recent Pro phones, the new design could be horizontal, rectangular, or elongated oval in shape. This new design is said to accommodate three cameras in a triangular configuration, and the flash and lidar sensor will be moved away from the right side of the module.

According to a leak from analyst Jeff Pu, both the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will come with 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch screens, respectively. While the front glass is said to be scratch-resistant and more durable than the existing Ceramic Shield.

Apple is also rumoured to introduce an all-new “super-hard” anti-reflective coating, which could make the screen even more shatter resistant.

Apple is also said to refine the dynamic island that initially appeared on the iPhone 14 Pro. Rumors indicate that the Pro Max version may feature a smaller dynamic island, perhaps because the phone will incorporate a “metal meta-lens”, which will enable better inclusion of TrueDepth camera elements.

In terms of thickness, the iPhone 17 Pro is also slated to be slightly thicker than the previous one, at 8.725 mm vs 8.25 mm. The extra thickness could provide room for a larger battery, which would translate to better battery life.

Internally, the iPhone 17 Pro models are rumoured to be powered by Apple’s new-generation A19 Pro processor, built using TSMC’s new 3NM (N3P) process. The new chip is reportedly going to offer significant performance and efficiency improvements over the A18 Pro processor used in the iPhone 16 Pro lineup.

All this being said, it’s worth noting that Apple hasn’t made any comments about the upcoming series. So, let’s take the fact of what it is, with a pinch of salt. Wait for an official launch announcement, which will happen sometime later this year.
