Internet Users To Have Access To Made In India Web Browser: Indian Company Zoho To Produce It, Could Give Google And Microsoft A Run For The Money

India is soon going to have a web browser of its own. Indian software company Zoho Corporation has been entrusted with the responsibility to produce it. The Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology made this announcement on Thursday (March 20).

The ministry had launched a competition called ‘Indian Web Browser Development Challenge’ to develop an indigenous web browser, for which Zoho Corporation has been declared the first prize winner. Zoho has been awarded the first prize money of Rs 1 crore for this.

Meanwhile, Team Ping was also declared as the first runner-up and Team Ajna third in The Challenge. Team Ping will receive Rs 75 lakh and Team Ajna will receive Rs 50 lakh. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw checked the prize money to all the champions. He said on the occasion that it was heartening to know that the champions of this challenge are coming from tier 2 and tier 3 cities.

What will be the niche of the browser

Data security: The government will own this browser and the country’s data will be hosted in the country. Data privacy: The Made in India browser will be compliant with the Data Privacy Act. User data will be secure. Will be supported on all devices: This browser will be supported by all operating systems like iOS, Windows, and Android.

US firms own internet surfing

US firms have web browsers operating across the world. Google Chrome is the most used among them. Google has about 850 million users (85 crores) in India, i.e., about 89% of the total users.

Rs 3 crore fund for web browser creation

The government has assured a fund of Rs 3 crore to develop a Made in India web browser. After preparation, it will be issued with a security certificate, and later, consumers will be able to use the indigenous browser.

Why is there a need for a Swadeshi Internet Browser?

Internet browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla, Firefox do not possess any Indian certification agency in its root store. The root store is mapped to the trust store along with the operating system and application status, whether it is secure or not. It does not have any Indian agency within its certificate. Currently, the browsers used in India do not have any collaboration with the Indian government for security and privacy, due to which India is soon going to develop its own internet browser. India is becoming more digital by the day. Security and privacy on the web is a huge issue in such a case.
