Evolution Of Indian Banking System

From the last two centuries in the Indian banking system has seen many types of development. In ancient time the Indian banking system was also being carried out by the mostly Businessman of India called as Chettis, Mahajanas, Sharoffs, Seths, And Sahukars. In ancient time the rich peoples of India also give money on interest rates to craftsman black Smith, small shopkeepers, traders and to other peoples and sometimes the rich people’s placed some money at the disposal of kings for any type of emergencies or wars. The rich peoples of india give this money to peoples with interest rate which at present time an important and main function of all types of banks.

In the last decides of 18th century the modern banking is originated in India. The first bank named as the general Bank of India was started in the year of 1786. And the another named is Bank of Hindustan. After sometime there are three banks started in India such as Bank of Bengal, Bank of Bombay, Bank of Madras. The bank of Bengal that was started in the year of 1806 from the other name of bank of Kolkata. And after sometime in the year of 1809 this bank was also known from the name of Bank of Bengal. Bank of Madras and the Bank of Bombay were set up . In the year of 1925 the three banks were merged from the name of Imperial Bank of India.

In the year of 1839 the mostly merchants of india established a bank in Kolkata named as Union Bank. But the Union Bank failed in the year of 1848 from the consequence of the economic crisis in the year of 1848 1849. After sometime in the year of 1863 a Upper Indian named Bank was established but it was also failed in the year of 1913 from many types of unknown reasons.

In the year of 1865 a bank was established named as Allahabad  Bank  which was the oldest survived Bank of India. After sometime in the year of 1881 in Faizabad a bank was established name as Oudh commercial bank. After many years of time a bank was established in the year of 1895 in Lahore named as Punjab National Bank. At present time Punjab National Bank is very popular and was also known with another name of PNB. There are many branches of Punjab National Bank in all over India. At present time Punjab National Bank the popular Bank of India.

During the time of 1906 to 1911 a movement starts in India at this time named as Swadeshi movement that inspired political figures businessman and other peoples to found various types of banks for yourself and for Indian peoples. After many years from the effect of Swadeshi movement there are many banks established in India such as Bank of Baroda, Bank of India, Canara Bank, Central Bank of India, Corporation Bank etc.

After sometime in the year of 1934 is a major Landmark took place in Indian banking history when a decision was taken by the Indian government to established a bank named as a Reserve Bank of India. The functioning of Reserve Bank of India started in in the year of 1935. At present time Reserve Bank of India is called as the central bank of country. Reserve Bank of India is the largest bank of India. Reserve Bank of India has minimum branches from the comparison of others Bank in India because Reserve Bank of India is a country and national level Bank.
