If you ask any blogger out there, they will most likely tell you to blog about what you love, and if you have enough passion, people will see it, and they will want to be a part of your community. While blogging your passion is good advice to get started, it’s not the whole truth. If you’ve been blogging for a little bit, you know there’s more to it than just blogging your passion. When most people start a blog, they have several different ideas. They choose a blog topic that they could discuss forever. Creating a list of blog posts is as easy as taking a moment to think and understand about what you know and what you want to share. This leads people to believe that if they just write a good blog post about what they know, they will be successful.
While this isn’t the most terrible way in the world to start blogging, it’s a good way to end up with a few hundred posts and only a few readers. So why does this happen? Because these bloggers are doing it completely wrong. The problem with dwelling on what you know is that you can put a lot of information on the blog, but you may never reach the person who won’t be most passionate about sharing your posts, retweeting ideas, and spreading the message. For example, let’s say you’re someone who is really into nutrition, and you love eating your vegetables and fruits. Unfortunately, this describes thousands of other nutrition bloggers. However, you believe that because you have amazing photos of different training methods, and you define new workout plans that actually get amazing results, you’re going to stand out from the crowd. Now, let’s talk about Mary. She’s a potential reader who is thirty-five years old, and she’s a single mom who works nights as a janitor at a local school. She already knows she needs to eat better and exercise more, but her problem is not knowing what she needs to do, but finding the motivation and time to do it!
If you stick to your original topic and only blog about nutrition in general, you’ve lost Mary. She may follow a link to your blog once, but she won’t stick around as a follower. However, the day she finds someone who is talking about the problem she has and helps her overcome the challenges she has in front of her, then she’s going to be that blog writer’s number one fan. Then she’s going to tell her friends. If your blog is ever going to be successful, you have to help someone. Inspire someone to think differently and change their life. Make someone’s life better.
Focus
The next thing an excellent blogger needs is focus. Ask yourself this one question. If you had a hundred new subscribers to your blog today, but all of them had to be a clone of an existing reader, who would it be? The biggest way to find that existing reader is to figure out who is the most generous about sharing your content, giving you thanks and praise, referring their friends to your site, buying your ebook, and someone you get excited about seeing in the comments section. Once you’ve identified this reader, ask yourself what they’re looking for on your blog, what specific problems they need solved, what their passions are, what their goals are, and what value you provide.
Now go to your blog and read the last ten posts on it. Look at all the images and work your way through your entire site with your top reader in mind. Imagine building this site for exactly that person. Ask yourself if the stories on the site relate to that reader. Are the images engaging? Is your reader able to connect with the real people who are behind the blog? Is the information relevant and interesting? Your blog should be created for your top reader and no one else. This is very hard to implement because you are most afraid of losing other traffic that may be there. However, when you strike a chord with that one reader when you solve their problem and make their life better, the reader tells their friends, promotes products, and keeps telling the story of your blog long after your other site visitors have moved on to the next blog. If there is one Mary out there for you, there are thousands more like her! So whose life will you change with your blog?
