The next big Apple iPhone update is iOS 18.4, with new Apple Intelligence features — though no giant leaps for Siri, which has made its headlines lately. There are also new emoji (one of which you’ll definitely need) and a new Vision Pro app. And now it looks like it’s coming a week earlier than expected. Details and new release date, below.
iOS 18.4 Apple Intelligence Update
Even if we’re dreaming of a brand-new Siri today, there are a few other things to look forward to, like priority notifications that search through them to show you what’s important. Apple’s newly released release notes inform us that a new look is coming to the image playground, dubbed Sketch, to take on animation and illustration: still more ways to let your imagination run wild.
And, in a fairly big addition to Apple Intellition, it will have eight other languages such as French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish. And, English for Indian and Singaporean users. Again, as before, Apple Intellition is limited to iPhone 16 models, such as the iPhone 16e, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
iOS 18.4 Apple Vision Pro app
If you own an Apple Vision Pro, your iPhone will automatically download this new app to help you discover new content or get to know your headset.
iOS 18.4 Photos
The Photos app update will include new ways of sorting items, new filters that reveal or hide items in the Library view, and album sorting controls. You can also turn off recently viewed items.
iOS 18.4 Apple News+
If you’re a News+ subscriber, there will be a big emphasis on food, with recipes from multiple publishers, additions to the Food section for stories about restaurants, kitchen tips and more.
iOS 18.4 Other Items and Bug Fixes
The release notes also tell us that recent various types of search suggestions in Safari will be improved. Parents will have less trouble setting up a child account, and kids will be clever enough to delete and reinstall an app to bypass screen time limits.
You can also stop downloading an app from the App Store and ambient music can be started right from the Control Center. There’s still more, including enhanced support for AirPods Max with USB-C.
iOS 18.4 Release Date: Earlier Than Previously Expected
Apple had been providing us with a series of hints as to when the release was due, so we knew we could look for it to be on the horizon in early April. The spotty appearance of a second release candidate beta on March 28th indicates that Apple has outdone itself and that it will happen sooner than we were anticipating.
It appears as though it is going to happen on Tuesday, April 1st at 10am Pacific. Apple has been releasing software on Mondays lately, so I think it is also possible, Monday, March 31st.
