Disadvantages of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Education

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transformed education, providing innovative tools and solutions to facilitate learning as well as reduce administrative hassles and enhance learning experiences overall. Kenyngham (2020) aptly states, “There are a lot of opportunities associated with AI, but there can also be potential threats.” So, here are more disadvantages of AI in education:

1.  Cost: Artificial Intelligence (AI) implementation is extremely expensive. Financially, the institution faces high costs when budgeted funds are spent on AI application such as training of staff or even setting up software and infrastructure.

2. Data privacy: The collection and analysis of students’ data by Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems gave rise to issues related to data security and privacy. All the important information about a student will eventually need to be well protected, as a breach can have severe consequences.

3. Ethical issues: Sometimes, unintentionally, biases prevalent in the data on which artificial intelligence programs are trained can be inadvertently reinforced in systems that can lead to biased decision-making in admissions, grading, or recommendation systems.

4. Personalization: Artificial Intelligence (AI) brings personalized learning experience, but it can also lead to a depersonalized education where students hardly have much time with their classmates and teachers, which is crucial for the development of the whole person.

5. Job displacement: There are fears that AI may replace some jobs in higher education, especially some specialties of teaching and support administrative roles such as clerks.

6. Technical challenges: Artificial Intelligence (AI) programs and applications need to be maintained, upgraded, and technical support is provided. Technical issues or failures can derail students’ learning.

7. Lack of human interaction: Some students may miss the human touch in education, as is the case with their peers, mentors, and professors: courses taught through or influenced by Artificial Intelligence (AI) can never replace those missing pieces of human interaction.

8. Limited creativity and critical thinking: Another thing that artificial intelligence will not be able to stand on is creativity, critical thinking, and any other form of open dialogue needed in higher education. However, Artificial Intelligence (AI) can provide factual details and assessment.

9. Connectivity issues: Some students’ access to Artificial Intelligence (AI)-learning tools may hinder them from using it fully due to unequal access.

10. Overreliance on technology: Teachers will rely heavily on automated tools and lose part of their teaching expertise due to excessive reliance on Artificial Intelligence (AI).

11. Resistance to change: Familiarity with traditional methods of teaching leads to reluctance in accepting Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education by faculty members and students.

12. Quality content issues: It is difficult to ensure high quality implemented by Artificial Intelligence (AI) due to the lack of depth and nuance in the information, which if generated from a human author, would likely be in the form of essay-writing or course-creation.

13. This bias and justice perhaps indicates that Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems may reinforce educational biases that favor select groups or demographic categories and therefore do not allow for justice and equality.

14. Complexity: Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems are not easy to understand and operate, and teachers have to be taught how to use them effectively, which may take time.

15. This will leave no room for students to make choices regarding their education as Artificial Intelligence (AI) can actually be highly employed in using all the provisions to make decisions that would otherwise be available.

Institutions must layout these Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems with utmost care; justice and transparency in the algorithms must also be ensured, along with data and privacy protection as well as teachers and students must be given training and support forever to overcome those unfavorable factors as well as to reap all the favorable effects that come from the use of AI in learning from the application. Ethical aspects must also always be present in the development of these AI solutions and their implementation to ensure that they are beneficial to all stakeholders.
